Learning to Read

I can't even believe I'm going to post these words right now. How is it possible? He's only 3!

David is learning to read!

I am so excited for him. It happened on accident. I had no intention of teaching him so soon, but his thirst for knowledge and learning has sparked this new adventure in our lives. He's been able to recognize all the letters for months now, so naturally this is the next step.

About a week ago, on the way to the library, we were approaching a STOP sign. David asked me why I was slowing down. I pointed to the sign and said, "Do you see the letters on that sign? S.T.O.P. Do you know what that spells?" Because he knew it was a STOP sign he deduced that it said, "Stop." "That's right!", I said. "S.T.O.P. spells stop."

Fast forward a few days later we were taking a walk/bike ride in our neighborhood. As we came to one of the STOP signs David said, "Look Mama, S.T.O.P., stop." I think I scared him with my excitement. My heart felt so happy that it might burst with pride for my little boy.

That night his book of choice happened to be "Go, Dog, Go!". In which the word "Stop" appears several times. As I read I would point to it and David would read "Stop". Now, I know that he knows that particular book by heart, so he was just reciting it. But, when you think about it, that's how we learn to read. Someone tells you that's what a word looks like and you remember it.
Since last week, through sounding out each letter, he has learned the words "Go", "Dog", and "Red" [all in the same book].

I'm thinking we'll add about one new word a week, no pressure. I want it to be fun and something he enjoys. I'm just amazed that my baby boy who was only 6 lbs. when he was born [which feels like yesterday] is now learning to READ!! Unbelievable.

Last Month of Being One

Today is September 7th.
What does that mean? Well, in one month Rachael will no longer be a one year old. How is that possible? I don't know.

She wanted to mark this day by wearing her super cute "1" shirt with matching hair bow because she only has a few more chances to wear it. Unfortunately, she [and David] have had head colds for over a week now [thanks to school, probably] and today she was really feeling it today. She slept terribly last night. So, she wasn't very happy this morning while I was trying to get a cute picture of her in her onesie.

Many of them look like this:

poor baby

I did finally coax a somewhat smile out of her

With her big brother right next to her she was happy

She tried to have fun playing outside this morning, but was exhausted and ready for her nap a whole lot sooner than normal.
Once she woke up she was a much happier little girl.

Here's to hoping this next month goes by slowly. [I can dream, right?] Also, hoping this cold leaves her and David very soon. I'm not ready for another cold season!!

Oh! And check out the back of her onesie:
too cute!

Labor Day Weekend

I can't believe another Summer has come and gone. It always goes by so fast. We said "goodbye" to Summer with family at the lake.

The kids had a great time on and off the boat.

Tractor riding with Big Daddy.

Fishing on the boat.

Rachael looking like a movie star.

Of course, on Saturday my little Georgia babies had to wear their UGA apparel.

David learned about badminton, sort of.

Rachael has to do whatever her brother does. Her version of falling down.

Baby Girl caught Mama painting her toenails and guess who wanted hers done too? So, Mama polished Rachael's toes for the very first time!

She sat pretty still for a toddler.

And LOVED blowing on them to help them dry. I love her concentration.

Mama and Rachael's toes.

She was one happy girl.

There was lots of "tubing" going on. David had the best time watching Ricky and Cate.

Mama and Rachael taking a ride on the boat.

David would say he wanted to tube, but when it came time for him to get on, he changed his mind...

But, as soon as the boat started moving he quickly changed his opinion.

During the ride

After the ride

Of course, Rachael wanted a turn too.

Love that smile!

We also celebrated Ricky's 11th birthday [a little late, but that's okay].

He was kind enough to let David and Rachael help with his gifts.

Rachael tried on Ricky's new hat

She cracks herself [and us] up!

Time to blow out the candles

All four cousins ready to dig into some cake!

Goodbye Summer, please stay around a lot longer next year!
